Key data management trends have emerged that are shaping the capabilities of IT products and services for 2020 and beyond.
The assortment of challenges and resulting solutions is wide-ranging. The result is that the range of solution choices is expanding dramatically. The variety of options is evidenced by the frequent use of prefixes such as "multi," "hybrid," and "not only" that have surfaced to describe the fact that there is no single approach to data management or analytics.

The stakes for expert data management continue to escalate. Data volumes are expanding rapidly and it is well-understood today that companies that harness the value of this precious commodity will be the winners.
With a growing appreciation for data’s value, spending on data management and analytics products and services is also on the rise. IDC forecasts revenues for big data and business analytics solutions will reach $189.1 billion in 2019 with double-digit annual growth projected through 2022, according to its “Worldwide Semiannual Big Data and Analytics Spending Guide.”
A new Unisphere Research report sponsored by Pythian also reveals that the vast majority of respondents believe that a well-documented data strategy is critical to their ability to deliver value to the business, and just about all respondents, 97%, have a documented data strategy (“Profiling the Data-Driven Business,” 2019).
However, it is not just companies that see the value of data. Criminals do, as well. According to IBM’s “2018 Cost of a Data Breach Study,” the average total cost of a data breach rose from $3.62 million to $3.86 million, an increase of 6.4% over the previous year. Understandably, the study found, the longer it takes to identify and contain a breach, the greater the cost.
Recognizing benefits and challenges inherent in data management, each year, DBTA compiles a list of 100 companies that matter in data, showcasing vendors that are addressing the interconnected demands for hardware, software, and services that help customers unlock their data’s potential. Some are long-standing companies with well-established offerings that have evolved over time, and others are much newer to the data scene.
